Patient Safety Starts in the Heart
Patient Safety starts in the heart
Human conscience guiding the fight
To prevent harm to those we cherish the most
The sick, the elderly, the vulnerable, the weak
Why do we come to serve every day?
Of course for those we pledge to keep safe
But how do we do it, against all these odds?
The cutbacks, the limits, the burn out, the loss
It’s simple my friends
Just imagine your most precious
Then decide what you would want done for them
See, it makes it easy to know what to do
Where to start and what route to pursue
How do I push, how do I fight, advocate when I know I am right?
It’s said that if we can help, then we must
At the most vulnerable they give us their trust
You call, you document, you elevate, you persist
To do nothing is to put moral compass at risk
How do we keep our passion when we see so much wrong?
Report occurrences, take action, don’t give up, do your part
For who else will speak loudly for our patients?
To keep them safe, we must be relentless
There is no harder job, then the battle frontline
It is sacred, cherished, often divine
There will always be struggles, limits, that heavy cost
Us battle worn, scarred, with hopeful rich hearts
It’s idealistic, it’s conceptual, and yes it’s complex
To build a safe system that passes the test
The choice should be simple, but it’s never easy
To grow teams, change ideals, heal our past deeds
It’s these building blocks, a foundation, on which we can lean
To provide the just culture and support desperately in need
Policy, process, more money will never be enough
It’s putting theory into practice that’s tough
Daily focus, commitment, efficiencies, shared goals
To err on the side of caution, with leadership support
If you look in your soul, and you are ready to fight
Using your voice to support patient safety will always be right
