A week after her physical, Nathan's mom seemed really confused, so he took her to the ER, describing her extreme confusion to the doctor. There was no examination; he didn’t even look at their mom or touch her. Tests showed a bladder infection with which the doctor reassured the confusion was normal.
After a few days of no improvement, they visit the ER again, a different doctor this time, but again no examination, and again a prescription. When another few days pass and his mom was still not well, Nathan tried to have her see her own doctor, but since he was about to be in surgery he tells them to go to the ER.
By now, very upset, Nathan steps in to advocate for his mom, and tells the ER doctor they really need some answers this time. All the tests were finally ordered, and because of a poor mental status test his mom was sent for a CT scan. The results of the CT were that she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer metastasized to the brain. At that point, there wasn't anything that could be done but make her comfortable. Nathan's mom died 7 weeks later.
